Best Spots in Florence
Sunset Sunrise
Piazzale Michelangelo
Oltrarno · 104 m elevation

The definitive Florence viewpoint. The Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio tower, Ponte Vecchio, and the full Arno bend are visible from a single position. At golden hour the Duomo's terracotta dome glows orange against the sky. The piazzale is large enough for multiple compositions. It is popular: arrive 45+ minutes early to find your frame without fighting the crowd. Sunrise from here is substantially quieter.

Sunset
San Miniato al Monte
Oltrarno · 10 min above Piazzale

A 10-minute walk uphill from Piazzale Michelangelo brings you to the Romanesque church of San Miniato and a terrace 60 m higher with a near-identical view and a fraction of the crowd. The church's white-and-green marble facade catches last light beautifully. The cemetery adjacent to the church has cypress-framed compositions that most tourists never find.

Sunset Sunrise
Fiesole
8 km northeast · 295 m

The hilltop town above Florence gives a broader perspective than Piazzale: the full city, the Arno valley, and Tuscan hills rolling south to the horizon. The Roman amphitheater terrace and the main Piazza Mino offer multiple framings. Take the No. 7 bus from Santa Maria Novella. Sunset from Fiesole positions the city below with the western sky behind it — the composition is wider and more dramatic than from Piazzale in good light.

Chianti Hills
Greve in Chianti area · Bortle 4–5

The classic Tuscany of cypress trees, rolling vineyards, and dark skies. Drive south on the Chiantigiana (SR222) to the ridgelines between Greve and Panzano for open southerly horizons. Milky Way core rises in the south June through August with Tuscan farmhouse silhouettes as foreground. This is one of the most photogenic dark sky landscapes in Italy. Check Starcast before leaving Florence — valley humidity can affect transparency differently at elevation.

Summer · Jun–Aug

Frequently Asked

Frequently Asked Questions — Florence Photography

The Arno valley traps humidity and haze, so a clear-looking afternoon doesn't guarantee vivid sunset color. Goldcast reads live aerosol levels, cloud cover, and humidity for Florence and returns a 0–100 score. Scores above 65 from Piazzale Michelangelo or Fiesole typically produce the classic golden Duomo. Spring and autumn score highest most consistently. Check tonight's score →
Florence sits at 43.8° north. In summer, golden hour begins around 7:45–8:15 PM. In winter it starts near 4:30 PM and lasts only 20–25 minutes. Even a brief winter golden hour raking across the Duomo's terracotta dome is exceptional. Goldcast calculates today's exact window and blue hour. Get today's golden hour →
The city is Bortle 8 — not suitable. The Chianti hills (25 km south, Bortle 4–5) are the most accessible escape with iconic Tuscan landscapes as foreground. The Crete Senesi (90 km south, Bortle 3) are the best dark skies in Tuscany. The Apennine foothills north of Florence (40 km, Bortle 3–4) offer high elevation alternatives. Valley humidity can reduce star transparency even at elevated dark sites: Starcast scores tell you before you drive. Check tonight's astro score →
The galactic core is visible April through September. The Chianti hills peak June through August on new moon nights with cypress and farmhouse foregrounds. July and August have the longest dark windows but summer humidity in the valley can reduce transparency: head to higher elevation sites like the Apennine passes when Starcast scores are marginal at lower altitudes. Check Chianti conditions →
Florence's historic UNESCO zone prohibits drone flight without specific municipal permits. Florence Airport (Peretola) restricts airspace over the northwest city. EASA rules require operator registration and a flyer ID throughout Italy. Legal flying areas exist outside the historic zone, but the most photographed locations are off-limits. Check Dronecast for wind conditions in approved areas before flying. Check Florence wind conditions →
Piazzale Michelangelo for the classic Duomo-Arno-Ponte Vecchio composition. San Miniato al Monte (10 min walk above Piazzale) for the same view with far fewer people. Fiesole (8 km northeast, 295 m) for a broader Tuscan panorama. Ponte Santa Trinita for low-angle Ponte Vecchio reflections. For sunrise, the rooftop of the Uffizi gallery area faces east toward Brunelleschi's dome in first light. See tonight's forecast →
