Marrakech, Morocco
Sunset · Astrophotography · Drone Flight · Pre-loaded for Marrakech
The square and the medina rooftops are the classic Marrakech sunset position. Facing west, you get the Koutoubia minaret in the left third of the frame with the desert sky opening up behind it. Several rooftop cafes around the square give good elevated access. A Marrakech sunset tonight from here in summer produces some of the most saturated skies of any major city in the world. The dry desert air does what humidity in European cities cannot.
Check tonight's sunset →Ground-level access to a clean silhouette of the Koutoubia minaret against the evening sky. The gardens give a clear western horizon and you can compose the 70-metre tower with the Atlas Mountains visible on the horizon on clear days. Sunrise from the east side of the gardens puts warm alpenglow on the tower's carved stone before the city wakes up. One of the cleaner architectural compositions in Marrakech without a rooftop.
Check golden hour timing →A rocky moonscape plateau 35 km west of Marrakech with the Atlas Mountains rising behind you to the east. Sunset here with the mountains in the frame is one of the finest landscape compositions accessible from the city. After dark, the sky turns extraordinary: the Agafay reaches Bortle 3–4 and on new moon nights the Milky Way is dramatically visible with no horizon obstructions. The closest world-class dark sky to any major African city.
Check Agafay tonight →Drive an hour into the Atlas and the landscape transforms completely. The Imlil valley gives Berber village foreground with snow-capped peaks above. Sunrise alpenglow on the Atlas in winter is exceptional: the pink and amber light on the snow from the east before the valley itself wakes up. The drive is straightforward and the reward is some of the most dramatic mountain light accessible from any major city in Africa.
