The square and the medina rooftops are the classic Marrakech sunset position. Facing west, you get the Koutoubia minaret in the left third of the frame with the desert sky opening up behind it. Several rooftop cafes around the square give good elevated access. A Marrakech sunset tonight from here in summer produces some of the most saturated skies of any major city in the world. The dry desert air does what humidity in European cities cannot.

Check Agafay tonight →Drive an hour into the Atlas and the landscape transforms completely. The Imlil valley gives Berber village foreground with snow-capped peaks above. Sunrise alpenglow on the Atlas in winter is exceptional: the pink and amber light on the snow from the east before the valley itself wakes up. The drive is straightforward and the reward is some of the most dramatic mountain light accessible from any major city in Africa.

- March through May is widely considered the ideal photography window: warm but not scorching, clear skies, and golden hour pushing later each week

- Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C in July and August: all serious photography moves to early morning and evening
- The heat creates haze in the city midday, but by evening the sky clears and Marrakech golden hour produces some of the year's most saturated color
- Peak Milky Way season: new moon nights at the Agafay in June through August are genuinely among the best dark sky experiences accessible from any major city in the world
- Sunrise shoots starting at 5 AM are feasible and the medina is completely quiet — the most peaceful time to photograph the souks
- September is excellent: summer heat breaks, the Milky Way is still up, and the tourist season hasn't fully resumed
- October brings softer light and longer shadows as the sun drops lower, making architectural photography in the medina richer
- The Atlas Mountains start getting snow on the highest peaks in November, adding drama to wider landscape shots from the city
- November is the last good month for Milky Way before the core sets for winter — October new moon is worth prioritizing
- Winter in Marrakech is mild by European standards (15–20°C days) but cold at night: the Atlas Mountains are fully snow-capped and spectacular
