Sunset
Rooftops around Djemaa el-Fna
Medina · Multiple terrace cafes

The square and the medina rooftops are the classic Marrakech sunset position. Facing west, you get the Koutoubia minaret in the left third of the frame with the desert sky opening up behind it. Several rooftop cafes around the square give good elevated access. A Marrakech sunset tonight from here in summer produces some of the most saturated skies of any major city in the world. The dry desert air does what humidity in European cities cannot.

Sunset Sunrise
Koutoubia Gardens
Medina edge · Mosque gardens

Ground-level access to a clean silhouette of the Koutoubia minaret against the evening sky. The gardens give a clear western horizon and you can compose the 70-metre tower with the Atlas Mountains visible on the horizon on clear days. Sunrise from the east side of the gardens puts warm alpenglow on the tower's carved stone before the city wakes up. One of the cleaner architectural compositions in Marrakech without a rooftop.

Agafay Desert
35 km west · Rocky plateau

A rocky moonscape plateau 35 km west of Marrakech with the Atlas Mountains rising behind you to the east. Sunset here with the mountains in the frame is one of the finest landscape compositions accessible from the city. After dark, the sky turns extraordinary: the Agafay reaches Bortle 3–4 and on new moon nights the Milky Way is dramatically visible with no horizon obstructions. The closest world-class dark sky to any major African city.

Atlas Mountains — Imlil valley
60 km northeast · 1,740m

Drive an hour into the Atlas and the landscape transforms completely. The Imlil valley gives Berber village foreground with snow-capped peaks above. Sunrise alpenglow on the Atlas in winter is exceptional: the pink and amber light on the snow from the east before the valley itself wakes up. The drive is straightforward and the reward is some of the most dramatic mountain light accessible from any major city in Africa.

Marrakech by Season
Spring · Mar–May
The best time to visit. Perfect temperatures, long evenings.
  • March through May is widely considered the ideal photography window: warm but not scorching, clear skies, and golden hour pushing later each week
  • The Atlas Mountains still have snow through April, giving exceptional foreground contrast for medina rooftop shots with peaks behind
  • Rose harvest season in the Dades Valley (April–May) is one of Morocco's most visually rich events: worth the day trip from Marrakech
  • New moon nights in April and May at the Agafay give Milky Way shooting with comfortable overnight temperatures
Summer · Jun–Aug
Intense heat. Exceptional skies.
  • Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C in July and August: all serious photography moves to early morning and evening
  • The heat creates haze in the city midday, but by evening the sky clears and Marrakech golden hour produces some of the year's most saturated color
  • Peak Milky Way season: new moon nights at the Agafay in June through August are genuinely among the best dark sky experiences accessible from any major city in the world
  • Sunrise shoots starting at 5 AM are feasible and the medina is completely quiet — the most peaceful time to photograph the souks
Autumn · Sep–Nov
Temperatures drop, crowds thin, light quality improves.
  • September is excellent: summer heat breaks, the Milky Way is still up, and the tourist season hasn't fully resumed
  • October brings softer light and longer shadows as the sun drops lower, making architectural photography in the medina richer
  • The Atlas Mountains start getting snow on the highest peaks in November, adding drama to wider landscape shots from the city
  • November is the last good month for Milky Way before the core sets for winter — October new moon is worth prioritizing
Winter · Dec–Feb
Cool, clear, and quieter than you'd expect.
  • Winter in Marrakech is mild by European standards (15–20°C days) but cold at night: the Atlas Mountains are fully snow-capped and spectacular
  • Sunset arrives around 5:45 PM in December, but the dry winter air produces crystal-clear skies and the Atlas is visible from the city on most days
  • The medina is at its most atmospheric in winter: low winter light rakes through the souks and the crowds are thinner
  • Winter nights are cold in the desert: the Agafay at 0°C in January is genuinely cold — plan layering for any overnight dark sky trips

Morocco has strict drone regulations. The medina, historic monuments, and areas around Menara Airport are prohibited. Commercial drone work requires a permit from ANAC. The Agafay Desert and remote Atlas areas are more permissive, but authorization is still advisable. Dronecast gives live wind and weather data for areas where flight may be permitted.
