Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Antelope Island?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, which factors in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Antelope Island good for astrophotography?
Antelope Island State Park sits in the Great Salt Lake, surrounded by water on all sides, which creates a natural dark buffer that few locations near a major metro can match. The Wasatch Range glows on the eastern horizon and the lake reflects the night sky when calm. Bison roam the island freely and occasionally appear as foreground silhouettes on night shots. Salt Lake City's light dome is visible to the northeast, but the southern and western horizons are genuinely dark. It's one of the most accessible dark sky locations within an hour of a major western city.
When is the Milky Way visible at Antelope Island?
The galactic core is visible at Antelope Island from April through October. The lake's still water provides reflection opportunities that are rare at most dark sky sites. Fall is the best season: bison rut brings wildlife activity, temperatures are comfortable overnight, and the Wasatch peaks behind the lake begin to show early snow on their upper slopes.
