Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Ocean Beach · West SD

Volcanic sea cliffs dropping straight into the Pacific. The jagged rock formations and tide pools provide strong foreground at low tide, with a completely unobstructed western horizon. The best positions are south of the main parking area where the cliffs are most dramatic. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to explore the cliff edge safely in daylight.

Torrey Pines State Reserve
La Jolla · North Coastal SD

Wind-sculpted Torrey Pines trees on sandstone bluffs overlooking the Pacific. At sunset, the warm light catches the orange-tan bluffs and the gnarled pine silhouettes against the sky. At sunrise, the east-facing canyon walls glow with the first light. The Guy Fleming Trail gives the best cliff-edge compositions. State park fee applies.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Borrego Springs · Bortle 2–3

California's largest state park and a designated Dark Sky Community. The desert floor is completely flat with 360-degree horizons, making it ideal for wide-field Milky Way work. The Borrego badlands and slot canyons add otherworldly foreground. Spring wildflower blooms (Feb–Apr) create extraordinary golden hour compositions during the day. The drive from San Diego takes about 90 minutes.

Coronado Bridge & Ferry Landing
Coronado Island

The Ferry Landing on Coronado gives a clean view back across the bay toward the downtown San Diego skyline. At golden hour, the city catches warm light from the west while the bay surface reflects the sky. The Coronado Bridge arc makes a strong framing element for telephoto shots of the city. Sunset from the ferry itself while it crosses the bay is a unique moving-platform composition.

San Diego by Season
Winter · Dec–Feb
Clearest skies of the year.
  • Marine layer retreats — most reliable window for fog-free coastal sunsets
  • Post-storm clearings produce vivid skies and sharp coastal air
  • Golden hour at ~5 PM with low sun angle raking across the cliffs
  • Gray whale migration season adds wildlife opportunity at coastal overlooks
Spring · Mar–May
Milky Way returns, fog variable.
  • Galactic core returns by April — Anza-Borrego wildflower blooms peak Feb–Apr
  • Morning marine layer usually burns off by midday; afternoons clearer
  • Best window for combining dark sky escapes with desert wildflower foreground
  • Consistent evening temperatures make all-night desert shoots comfortable
Summer · Jun–Aug
June Gloom — plan around the fog.
  • Marine layer is thickest in June and July — often blocks coastal sunset entirely
  • Milky Way core peaks but marine layer limits shooting from the coast
  • Head inland or east to Anza-Borrego for reliable clear-sky shoots
  • Fog can clear dramatically in late afternoon, creating unique coastal light
Fall · Sep–Nov
Best overall window for photography.
  • Santa Ana wind events clear the marine layer for days at a time
  • Some of the highest sunset scores of the year follow Santa Ana clearings
  • Milky Way core still visible through October from dark sky escapes
  • Ideal temperatures and long clear windows for both coastal and desert shoots
