Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Black Canyon?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Black Canyon good for astrophotography?
Black Canyon of the Gunnison is an International Dark Sky Park sitting at 8,000 feet on the Colorado Plateau, with Bortle 2 conditions and some of the darkest skies in Colorado. The canyon drops nearly 2,700 feet to the Gunnison River below — one of the steepest and darkest chasms in North America. Shooting from the South Rim with the canyon dropping away beneath you and the Milky Way rising above the dark walls produces a depth of field that's hard to replicate. The region is isolated from the Front Range light dome and has minimal nearby development.
When is the Milky Way visible at Black Canyon?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. The high elevation means cold nights even in summer — pack layers. The South Rim road stays open year-round and gives access to multiple overlooks facing south and east. Gunnison Point and Chasm View are the most accessible positions for shooting the canyon walls under the Milky Way. The park campground on the South Rim is within walking distance of several dark sky overlooks.
