Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Enchanted Rock?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Enchanted Rock good for astrophotography?
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area sits in the Texas Hill Country 18 miles north of Fredericksburg, far enough from Austin and San Antonio to have Bortle 3 to 4 skies on good nights. The exposed pink granite dome rises 425 feet above the surrounding terrain, giving elevated 360-degree sky views with no tree obstruction. The smooth dome surface and the surrounding oak savanna create distinctive foreground options. The park is one of the most accessible dark sky locations within driving distance of Central Texas, and the summit is reachable in under 30 minutes.
When is the Milky Way visible at Enchanted Rock?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. The Hill Country latitude puts the core at a good elevation above the southern horizon during summer. The park requires advance reservations and caps nightly entry — book well ahead for new moon weekends in summer, which sell out quickly. The summit and the saddle between the main dome and Little Rock both give clear southern exposures.
