Mount Bromo is an active volcano inside a massive ancient caldera in East Java, with a smoking crater, a flat Sea of Sand, and a ring of outer peaks creating one of the most otherworldly landscapes in Southeast Asia. The Penanjakan viewpoint above the caldera is the classic vantage for both sunrise and sunset. At golden hour the volcanic ash plain turns copper and the smoke from Bromo's crater catches backlight.
