Why Joshua Tree Works for Astrophotography

Joshua Tree sits at the junction of the Mojave and Colorado deserts, roughly 140 miles east of Los Angeles. The park interior reaches Bortle 2 — the same sky darkness you'd find in remote Utah, but within a two-hour drive of one of the largest metro areas in the US. For Southern California photographers, nothing else comes close.

The foreground is what sets it apart from other desert dark sky sites. Joshua trees are unlike anything else in the American Southwest: branching, irregular silhouettes that look almost sculptural against a starry sky. Pair that with the massive granite boulder formations scattered across the park — Skull Rock, the Wonderland of Rocks, Hidden Valley — and you have a location that almost composes itself.

Joshua Tree was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2017. The park sits at 4,000–5,000 feet elevation in its northern section, which helps with atmospheric transparency. Palm Springs to the southwest is your main concern: it produces a visible glow on the southern horizon, which means south-facing compositions from the western edge of the park are compromised. Orient yourself toward the east or north and the glow largely disappears.

02 · Season

Best Time to Shoot the Milky Way at Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree is accessible year-round, which makes it unusual among dark sky parks. The galactic core is below the horizon after dark from November through February, but those months are excellent for star trails, wide-field constellation work, and winter Milky Way arch shots in the pre-dawn hours.

March through May is the sweet spot. The galactic core becomes visible in the evening sky in spring and temperatures are ideal — nights drop to 40–55°F, which is cold enough to be comfortable for long sessions without the extreme cold of winter. April new moon weekends are particularly good: the core is positioned well, campgrounds are full but not chaotic, and the Joshua trees are sometimes in bloom.

September and October are underrated. Summer crowds clear after Labor Day, temperatures become manageable again, and the core is still high enough in the south to work with. October nights can drop below freezing at elevation, so bring layers.

Avoid summer if possible

July and August daytime temperatures regularly exceed 110°F in the lower elevations of the park. Camping is physically brutal, and heat stored in the rocks radiates back through the night. The galactic core is well-positioned in summer, but the conditions make it the hardest season to shoot comfortably. If summer is your only option, stay in the northern high-elevation sections of the park and camp in shade.

Best Shooting Locations at Joshua Tree

East Park Road

Skull Rock

The most recognizable single rock formation in the park. Skull Rock sits right off the main park road with a large pullout — no hiking required. The formation is about 20 feet tall with two naturally eroded eye sockets that give it the skull appearance. At night, positioning yourself low and pointing east or northeast puts Palm Springs glow behind you and the darkest part of the sky directly ahead. The surrounding boulder field gives you multiple foreground options within a short walk of the pullout. Gets crowded during the day; at 11pm you'll often have it to yourself.
Pinto Basin Road

Cholla Cactus Garden

A dense grove of teddy bear cholla cactus in the transition zone between the Mojave and Colorado deserts. The cholla spines backscatter light — with a headlamp or the ambient glow of the Milky Way, they create an almost bioluminescent effect that's unlike any other foreground in the park. Shoot looking north or northeast for the darkest sky. The trail through the garden is short and well-defined; bring a headlamp and watch where you step — cholla spines detach and embed easily. Located in the lower, warmer part of the park, so heat is more of a factor here in summer.
South Entrance

Cottonwood Springs

The southeastern corner of the park near the Cottonwood Visitor Center is the farthest point from all nearby towns and consistently one of the darkest locations in Joshua Tree. The lower Sonoran Desert here looks different from the northern park — ocotillo, palo verde, and fan palms replace the Joshua trees, giving you a completely different foreground character. The campground puts you right at the site. For the best dark sky, walk southeast from the campground into the open desert. The horizon is flat in all directions with no nearby ridgelines blocking any part of the sky.
Western Park

Hidden Valley Campground Area

Hidden Valley sits in the Wonderland of Rocks, a massive field of monzogranite boulders that creates natural walls and enclosures. At night the boulders catch moonlight and Milky Way glow in a way that adds depth to compositions. The campground is walk-in only for non-campers during the day, but at night you can park at the trailhead and access the surrounding boulder field on foot. The western park gets a bit more Palm Springs glow than the eastern sections, but the foreground quality compensates. Best compositions face north or northeast from the campground perimeter.
04 · Camera Settings

Camera Settings for Joshua Tree Astrophotography

At Bortle 2 and 3,500–5,000 feet of elevation, Joshua Tree gives you real dark sky to work with. The main variable is Palm Springs glow on the southern horizon — avoid south-facing compositions or be ready to deal with an orange-to-yellow gradient at the bottom of your frame that requires masking in post. Shoot east and north and you won't have this problem.

Aperture
f/2 – f/2.8. Joshua tree silhouettes are clean foreground shapes that don't need to be resolved in detail — wide open is fine. If your lens has noticeable coma at f/2, stop to f/2.2 or f/2.5.
Shutter
15–20 sec at 14–24mm. At 33–34°N latitude, stars move faster than at higher latitudes. Use the 500 rule as your starting point: 500 ÷ focal length = max seconds. Check stars at 100% on your LCD before committing to a sequence.
ISO
ISO 1600–3200 to start. Bortle 2 at elevation gives you genuine headroom. Bracket your first set of frames at 1600, 3200, and 6400 and evaluate on a properly dark-adapted eye before settling on a setting.
White Balance
RAW, 3800–4200K. The desert air is dry and clean, which keeps color casts minimal. If you're shooting toward Palm Springs, expect warm glow at the bottom of the frame — a slightly cooler WB helps neutralize it without making the rest of the sky look off.
Light painting
Joshua trees respond well to a brief warm light. A 2–3 second sweep with a headlamp set to warm white or red during a separate foreground exposure adds texture to the trunk and branches. Blend with the star exposure in post. Don't overdo it — a subtle glow reads better than a floodlit tree.
05 · Logistics

Logistics: Access, Crowds, and Permits

Timed entry permits required in peak season. Joshua Tree implemented a timed entry reservation system for busy periods — typically spring weekends and holidays. Check recreation.gov well in advance for spring new moon weekends, which are the most competitive. Weeknight visits rarely require advance booking.
Campgrounds fill fast. Jumbo Rocks, Skull Rock, and Hidden Valley campgrounds are first-come, first-served in some seasons. Cottonwood is reservable at recreation.gov. For new moon weekends, book 6 months out or arrive Thursday for a weekend shoot. Dispersed camping is not permitted inside the park.

No water available in most of the park. The only water sources inside Joshua Tree are at the visitor centers and a few campgrounds. Carry more than you think you need — desert dehydration happens faster at night than you expect when you're focused on photography and not paying attention to your body.

Cell service is limited to none in most of the park interior. Download offline maps before you enter — Gaia GPS and Maps.me both work well. Save your shooting locations as waypoints so you can navigate to them in the dark without relying on signal.
