Best Spots in Anchorage
Sunset Sunrise
Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
Downtown · Knik Arm waterfront

The best accessible sunset location in Anchorage. The trail runs 18 km along Knik Arm with the Alaska Range filling the western horizon. When the sun drops behind Denali on clear evenings, the light on the water and the mountains is extraordinary. Point Woronzof at the north end of the trail gives the widest unobstructed view over Cook Inlet.

Flattop Mountain
Chugach State Park · 1,073m

The most-hiked peak in Alaska and one of the best photography locations near Anchorage. From the summit you get the city below, Cook Inlet to the west, and the Alaska Range across the water. At golden hour the city lights come up as the sun drops behind the range. In winter, the summit gives a clear dark sky view with the aurora to the north.

Sunrise
Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary
South Anchorage · Wetland boardwalk

A boardwalk wetland just south of the city where the Chugach Mountains rise directly behind the marsh. Sunrise here in autumn puts warm alpenglow on the peaks above while moose and waterfowl work the foreground. One of the most accessible wildlife and landscape combinations in any North American city. Best in September and October when the light is low and crisp.

Night sky ~60 km north
Mat-Su Valley
Palmer · Bortle 3–4

Drive north on the Glenn Highway and the light pollution drops fast. The Mat-Su Valley around Palmer and Wasilla reaches Bortle 3–4, with the Chugach and Talkeetna ranges as foreground. This is where most Anchorage photographers come for aurora and winter star work. A clear night in January or February from a dark valley field here is hard to beat anywhere in the US.

Anchorage by Season
Spring · Mar–May
Snow on the peaks, long light returning fast.
  • Daylight increases rapidly in March and April — over 5 minutes per day — making every week noticeably different for planning golden hour
  • Snow-capped Chugach peaks with low spring light produce some of the best alpenglow conditions of the year
  • March is the last reliable aurora month before nights get too bright: clear new moon nights are worth prioritizing
  • Break-up in April turns trails and roads muddy — factor access into location planning
Summer · Jun–Aug
Midnight sun. Endless golden light.
  • Around the summer solstice, Anchorage gets over 19 hours of daylight — the sun barely sets and golden hour can last well past midnight
  • The low sun angle all day means nearly everything is in warm, raking light for hours at a time
  • No aurora visible in summer: nights never get dark enough between May and August
  • Wildlife is active and accessible: moose calves in Kincaid Park, bears on the Kenai, eagles along Turnagain Arm
Autumn · Sep–Oct
The best month to photograph Anchorage.
  • September is widely considered peak season: birch and aspen turn gold, alpenglow returns, and aurora season opens
  • The equinox in late September brings some of the year's strongest geomagnetic activity, ideal for aurora hunting in the Mat-Su
  • October brings first snow to the high peaks while valleys are still clear: the contrast is exceptional for mountain photography
  • Days shorten fast: golden hour moves from late evening to late afternoon within just a few weeks
Winter · Nov–Feb
Short days. Long nights. Aurora season.
  • December has only about 5.5 hours of daylight — but the low sun produces nearly all-day golden light when the sky is clear
  • January through March is peak aurora season: long dark nights and frequent geomagnetic activity
  • Snow transforms the landscape and reflects both moonlight and aurora, creating foreground that summer simply can't offer
  • Cold affects batteries significantly — keep spares warm and plan shorter sessions than you would in warmer climates

Aurora is visible from areas around Anchorage roughly September through March, with the equinox periods in September and March bringing some of the strongest activity. The city itself has light pollution, so drive 60 km north into the Mat-Su Valley for much better aurora viewing. Clear skies are essential: Starcast scores cloud cover to help you pick the right night. Check Mat-Su sky conditions →
Anchorage has significant restrictions around Ted Stevens International Airport and Elmendorf Air Force Base. Many state parks and coastal areas have additional rules. You must be FAA-registered and follow Part 107 rules. Cold temperatures affect lithium batteries hard — fly shorter sessions, keep spares in a warm pocket, and check wind conditions before you go. Tony Knowles Coastal Trail for Knik Arm and Alaska Range at golden hour, Flattop Mountain for elevated views over the city and Cook Inlet, Potter Marsh for wildlife and Chugach alpenglow at sunrise, and Point Woronzof for unobstructed Cook Inlet horizon shots.
