West Hills · Portland

The highest point in Portland at 1,073 feet, with 360-degree views across the city to Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Rainier on clear days. Columbia River Gorge
30 min east · Historic Highway

One of the most photogenic river gorges in North America. Multnomah Falls and the basalt cliff walls are the iconic subjects, but the long elevated views from Crown Point Vista House are exceptional at golden hour. In winter, low cloud in the gorge creates atmospheric mist-and-cliff conditions unique to this landscape. Fall foliage peaks in October along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Painted Hills · John Day Fossil Beds
Mitchell, OR · Bortle 2–3

One of the most visually striking dark sky destinations in the Pacific Northwest. The Painted Hills are clay formations in red, gold, and black bands that glow under Milky Way light. The region is remote enough for genuine Bortle 2-3 skies. The drive from Portland is about 3.5 hours, making it a weekend destination. July and August offer the best combination of clear skies and galactic core visibility.

Government Camp · 11,240 ft

Oregon's highest peak at 11,240 feet. Timberline Lodge sits at 6,000 feet on the south slope, accessible year-round, and gives you a front-row view of the mountain's upper slopes and the Cascades spreading south. At sunrise, the summit catches pink alpenglow before the valley below is lit. The wildflower meadows below Timberline bloom in July and August, adding extraordinary foreground for wide-angle peak compositions.
