About Me

My name is Megan Tucker, and I'm the creator of LightCast Suite. I'm a mostly self-taught photographer from Massachusetts and love everything about photography. My favorite shots are captured outdoors while hiking or traveling, but I also shoot portraits, events, aerial landscapes, and real estate.

I started building LightCast Suite as a personal project while finishing my senior year at Bentley University in February 2026. The idea came to me when I was planning a sunrise shoot and couldn't figure out if the 5am wake-up to hike would be worth it. I had long been frustrated by fragmented and confusing weather data on the internet, with none of it being made for photographers, so I decided to use my marketing and CS knowledge to build my own tool.

In just the first 5 weeks, LightCast reached over 3,800+ photographers across 97 countries and was featured in PetaPixel, the world's biggest photography publication. LightCast's global reach has been with no marketing budget or ad spend, and the response has been incredible!

In April 2026, I launched v1 of LightCast Suite on iOS, following many requests to turn this into a real app. The iOS version includes a dashboard for saved locations, 2 additional forecasts (CloudCast & FogCast), push notifications, stronger forecasting algorithms, & more advanced features. LightCast Suite on iOS is $2.99/mo and comes with a free, 7-day trial to get started.

To stay connected, find me on Instagram @flicsbymegan with my most recent photography. I have been shooting for almost 10 years and am a licensed FAA Part 107 pilot. You can also browse my work on my personal portfolio.

Frequently Asked

Frequently Asked Questions

LightCast pulls real-time forecast data from Open-Meteo, a professional weather API used by researchers and developers worldwide. Each tool runs that data through a scoring model built around what actually matters for photography: cloud layer structure, humidity, visibility, moon phase, wind, and more.

The scores are probabilistic, as weather forecasts are never guaranteed, even from professional meteorologists. Any light can be worth chasing with the right gear, so instead of encouraging you to not shoot, LightCast aims to help determine better windows and dates for those who are unsure, looking for prime conditions, or in a time crunch.
LightCast Suite on iOS is more advanced in all ways.

It exclusively has CloudCast and FogCast, new forecasts determing light penetration and mist layers. More metrics go into the scoring algorithms, giving you more accurate forecasts. You can save locations to the app's dashboard, so you don't need to search for scores. You can also get push notifications to your phone when conditions cross your thresholds. I am actively working on developing new features, such as widgets for home screens and additional forecasts. I also plan to continue to add more depth and insight reports to each existing tool.
Yes. LightCast is being actively developed, and new features will be added to the iOS version. My current focus is on refining the scoring models, improving user experience, and developing new forecast tools.

I consider new feature suggestions and am always open to receiving feedback or hearing your thoughts at [email protected]
Yes, I plan to keep the web version free with simplified versions of each tool. My goal is to keep it this way for as long as possible.

Full transparency - while I do receive some revenue from the paid iOS version, the web and iOS are expensive to host. If infrastructure costs from traffic increase too much for me to support the free web version on my own, some changes might come down the road. I can't guarantee it will be 100% free forever, but I'd like it to be.

If you find the web version useful and want to support keeping it free, I have a buymeacoffee page for donations, but it's entirely optional.
Feel free to email me at [email protected] directly. Feature requests, bug reports, and general feedback are all welcome. This is a solo-built tool, and real user feedback is how it gets better. I do my best to respond to all inquiries within 48h.
