Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Brecon Beacons?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Brecon Beacons good for astrophotography?
Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park in south Wales was the first national park in Wales to be designated an International Dark Sky Reserve, receiving the designation in 2012. The park's open moorland and sandstone plateau, reaching 886 meters at Pen y Fan, give wide, unobstructed southern horizons ideal for Milky Way framing. Cardiff is 50 kilometers to the south but largely screened by the Beacons' ridge. The park is one of the most accessible dark sky reserves in the UK from a major population center, sitting within two to three hours of London by road. Sgwd yr Eira waterfall and the Usk Reservoir are popular night foreground locations.
When is the Milky Way visible at Brecon Beacons?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. The Beacons' lower latitude compared to northern UK locations means the core rises higher in the south, improving compositions. Clear nights most reliably follow cold fronts in spring and autumn when continental high pressure settles over Wales. Summer offers some of the year's best weather but shorter nights. The open plateau above 600 meters clears cloud more quickly after fronts pass than the wooded valleys below, so high positions on the ridge are worth targeting when forecasts show improving conditions.
