Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Cedar Mesa?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Cedar Mesa good for astrophotography?
Cedar Mesa is a remote plateau within Bears Ears National Monument in southeast Utah, right next to Natural Bridges National Monument, the world's first International Dark Sky Park, certified at Gold Tier in 2007. The mesa's canyons hold Ancestral Puebloan ruins and rock art, including sites like House on Fire and Moon House, giving photographers a cultural foreground rarely found alongside skies this dark. The area's extremely sparse population keeps light pollution close to nonexistent.
When is the Milky Way visible at Cedar Mesa?
Core season runs April through October, peaking June through August. Utah's desert can see monsoon storms in July and August, so check the forecast before heading out on the mesa's backcountry roads. Fall brings clear, cool nights and fewer visitors.
