Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Chama?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, which factors in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Chama good for astrophotography?
Chama sits at 7,800 feet at the edge of the Carson National Forest and the vast Jicarilla Apache land to the west, with Bortle 2-3 skies in most directions. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad runs through the area, and the historic steam engine and trestle bridges make for unusual foreground subjects. The Chama River meadows give open south-facing sight lines.
When is the Milky Way visible at Chama?
The galactic core is visible from late March through October. Autumn is exceptional here: aspen color peaks in late September and the core is still visible in the southwest after dark, offering rare fall foreground options. Summer evenings are the most popular window for core visibility.
