Curecanti stretches along Blue Mesa Reservoir in a remote stretch of western Colorado with Bortle 2-3 skies. The canyon walls of the Gunnison River create layered silhouettes, and the reservoir reflects stars on calm nights. The nearby Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a designated Dark Sky Park, and Curecanti shares much of the same sky quality with more accessible shoreline access.

The galactic core is visible from late March through October. Western Colorado's semi-arid climate keeps humidity low and clouds infrequent compared to the mountains. The core rises over the canyon rims to the south and reflects in the reservoir in early summer, which is peak season for this location.
