Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Elqui Valley?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Elqui Valley good for astrophotography?
The Elqui Valley in Chile's Coquimbo Region is the southern extension of the Atacama's dark sky corridor, at a more accessible latitude than San Pedro. The valley runs east into the Andes at around 1,000 to 3,000 meters, with a semi-arid climate, low humidity, and 300+ clear nights per year. The nearby Mamalluca and Cerro Mamalluca public observatories operate here because of the sky quality. The valley itself has a distinctive landscape of steep river-carved walls, terraced vineyards (the valley produces pisco), and small villages with minimal light. Bortle Class 1 to 2 conditions are standard across the upper valley.
When is the Milky Way visible at Elqui Valley?
The galactic core is visible from February through October in the Southern Hemisphere. April through August is the peak season: nights are long, the air is dry and stable, and the galactic center rises high overhead. The valley's consistent clear nights mean most attempts succeed without requiring multiple nights of flexibility. The village of Pisco Elqui and the Cochiguaz sector further up the valley are the most used night photography base camps, with dark sky-certified accommodation in both areas.
