Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing near Farmington?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, which factors in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes the Farmington area good for astrophotography?
Farmington is the gateway to the San Juan Basin, one of the most consistently dark regions in the Southwest. Driving 15 minutes onto the surrounding mesa puts you in Bortle 2-3 territory. Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness to the south is a premier dark-sky destination with alien-looking hoodoos and crumbling mudstone formations. Angel Peak Scenic Area to the east offers similar terrain closer to town.
When is the Milky Way visible near Farmington?
The galactic core is visible from late March through October. The high desert climate delivers some of the lowest average humidity in New Mexico and consistent clear nights year-round. The core arcs high to the south in summer directly above the Bisti badlands landscape, which is peak season for this area.
