Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Flaming Gorge?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, which factors in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Flaming Gorge good for astrophotography?
Flaming Gorge Reservoir straddles the Utah-Wyoming border in one of the most remote stretches of the interior West. The deep red canyon walls drop directly into the reservoir's blue-green water, creating layered color visible even in night photography. Bortle class is 2-3 across most of the area, and the nearest cities are over 100 miles away. Red Canyon overlook gives an elevated perspective above the gorge with a wide southern horizon.
When is the Milky Way visible at Flaming Gorge?
The galactic core is visible from late March through October. The high desert climate keeps humidity low and transparency consistently high, making Flaming Gorge one of the more reliable windows in the region. Still-water reflections are best in late spring before summer wind picks up.
