Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Goblin Valley?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, which factors in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Goblin Valley good for astrophotography?
Goblin Valley State Park is one of Utah's best-kept astrophotography secrets. The hoodoo formations, locally called goblins, are clustered densely enough that you can walk among them in the dark and find a new composition every 20 feet. The park sits in a remote section of the San Rafael Desert with Bortle 2 skies and almost zero horizon glow in any direction. The eroded sandstone shapes create alien-looking foreground that separates Goblin Valley images immediately from the canyon-and-arch look of nearby national parks. The campground is on-site, and the valley floor is flat enough to set up anywhere.
When is the Milky Way visible at Goblin Valley?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. Spring and fall are the most comfortable for overnight shooting: summer nights in the desert can stay above 80°F well past midnight, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. The park is less visited than nearby Capitol Reef and Arches, so even peak season weekends rarely feel crowded at 2am.
