Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing in Leavenworth?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night for astrophotography. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Leavenworth good for astrophotography?
Leavenworth sits at 1,165 feet in the Wenatchee River valley on the eastern slope of the Cascades, positioned in the rain shadow of Stevens Pass. This location gives it far more clear nights than the western-slope communities around it — the Cascade crest wrings moisture from Pacific systems, and Leavenworth typically experiences drier, clearer conditions than Seattle or Wenatchee Valley to the east. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest rises immediately above town with Bortle Class 3 to 4 skies accessible within minutes. Icicle Canyon west of Leavenworth is a well-used climbing and recreation corridor that also provides accessible dark sky terrain beneath the granite Cascade cliffs. The Enchantments wilderness above Icicle Creek — one of the most celebrated alpine zones in Washington — is an extraordinary backcountry astrophotography destination with glacial lakes, Prussian-blue tarns, and 9,000-foot granite peaks.
When is the Milky Way visible near Leavenworth?
The galactic core is visible from approximately late March through early October, though Washington's northern latitude means midsummer nights are short and astronomical darkness is compressed in June and July. The most productive Milky Way windows near Leavenworth are May and then late August through September, when nights lengthen again and the core remains reasonably positioned. The Enchantments permits open via lottery from mid-July through October and require advance planning. Icicle Canyon and the forest roads above town are accessible from spring through autumn without permits. Washington's Cascade rain shadow makes Leavenworth one of the clearer shooting locations in the state, but the Pacific Northwest weather pattern means clear nights should be seized quickly when they arrive.
