Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Lost Maples?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Lost Maples good for astrophotography?
Lost Maples State Natural Area in the Texas Hill Country sits in a canyon carved by the Sabinal River, about 100 miles from San Antonio and two hours from Austin. The surrounding hills block most regional light, and the area between Vanderpool and Leakey has some of the darkest skies accessible by paved road in central Texas, typically Bortle Class 3 to 4. The limestone canyon walls and bigtooth maple groves create a forested foreground unusual for Texas night photography. The Primitive Camping Area puts you well away from any trailhead lighting.
When is the Milky Way visible at Lost Maples?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. The Hill Country can be humid compared to west Texas, which affects seeing quality on warm summer nights. May and June tend to have the best combination of Milky Way core height and reasonably stable air before summer humidity builds. Fall is popular for the maple foliage but the core is low in the southwest by October. Reserve campsites early: Lost Maples fills up quickly on fall weekends.
