Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Northumberland?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Northumberland good for astrophotography?
Northumberland National Park and the adjacent Kielder Water and Forest Park form the largest area of protected dark sky in England. Kielder Observatory is an active public astronomy facility that operates specifically because of the sky quality here. The moors, ancient Roman Wall (Hadrian's Wall), and Kielder Reservoir give photographers landscape variety unusual for northern England. Newcastle is 60 kilometers to the east but its light dome is largely absorbed by the terrain. The area holds Gold Tier dark sky status, the highest designation available, with Bortle Class 2 to 3 conditions across the moorland.
When is the Milky Way visible at Northumberland?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. The best Milky Way conditions fall in late spring through early autumn (April through September), when the core is above the southern horizon during the hours of darkness available at this latitude. Winter is aurora season: Northumberland's northern position and Gold Tier dark skies make it one of the best aurora viewing locations in England, visible on geomagnetically active nights several times per year. Hadrian's Wall at night is one of the most evocative landscape photography subjects in the country.
