Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Oulanka National Park?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Oulanka National Park good for astrophotography?
Oulanka National Park straddles the Arctic Circle in northeastern Finland near the Russian border, protecting a subarctic landscape of river canyons, boreal forest, and open fells that is one of the most scenic and remote wilderness areas in Finland. The park is famous for the Karhunkierros trail — one of the best-known trekking routes in Scandinavia — and the suspension bridges and canyon viewpoints along the Oulankajoki River. Its position well above the Arctic Circle and far from Finnish population centers produces Bortle Class 1 to 2 skies with clean horizons in all directions. The canyon walls, river reflections, and pine forest provide varied foreground, and the park's latitude makes it an exceptional aurora destination, with displays visible on most clear nights from late August through April.
When is the Milky Way visible at Oulanka National Park?
Above the Arctic Circle, true darkness is absent from late May through mid-July. As darkness returns in late July and August, the galactic core is briefly visible before the aurora season dominates the sky. September and October bring rapidly lengthening nights with strong aurora activity and the autumn colors of the boreal forest as foreground. Winter delivers extraordinarily long dark nights with frequent and intense aurora displays over snow-covered canyons and frozen rivers. Cross-country skiing and snowshoe access extends the winter photography season into the park's more remote areas.
