Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Palo Pinto Mountains?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Palo Pinto Mountains good for astrophotography?
Palo Pinto Mountains State Park opened in 2022 as the newest state park in Texas, covering rolling limestone hills and cedar breaks in Palo Pinto County west of Fort Worth. The park was designed from the start with dark sky access in mind and sits within a relatively dark corridor between the DFW metroplex to the east and Abilene to the west. The canyons, ridgelines, and post oak terrain give photographers a more varied landscape than most of central Texas. For DFW-area photographers, it's one of the closest options for Milky Way shooting without driving to west Texas.
When is the Milky Way visible at Palo Pinto Mountains?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. Spring evenings are the most reliable for clear skies in north-central Texas. Summer can bring heat and humidity that degrades transparency, though the galactic core is highest in the sky from June through August. The park's campground and trail system are still developing as of 2024, so check current amenities before planning a night shoot.
