Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Pinnacles?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, which factors in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Pinnacles good for astrophotography?
Pinnacles is one of the least-visited national parks in California, which works in photographers' favor: dark skies within two hours of the Bay Area and San Jose with minimal crowds even on weekends. The park is a designated Dark Sky Park. The volcanic spire formations, talus caves, and high chaparral ridgelines create textured foreground that most Central Coast locations can't match. The east entrance campground keeps you on-site for pre-dawn shoots without a long drive in the dark.
When is the Milky Way visible at Pinnacles?
The galactic core is visible at Pinnacles from March through October. Spring is particularly good: California's interior dries out quickly after winter rains, and the core rises in the southeast right above the volcanic formations. Summer brings reliable clear skies but warmer overnight temperatures. High Peaks Trail offers elevated shooting positions with wide southern horizons.
