Ridgway sits at the northern gateway to the San Juan Mountains, with the Cimarron Range and Mount Sneffels visible to the south and west. Ridgway State Park's reservoir provides still-water reflections of the peaks and sky on calm nights. The town produces minimal light, and the Uncompahgre Plateau blocks eastern glow. Montrose is 25 miles north but its light stays low on the horizon at this distance.

The galactic core is visible from late March through October. The valley position keeps Ridgway in clear air when clouds cling to the high peaks to the south. The core rises in the southeast in spring, framed by the jagged Cimarron Ridge silhouette.
