Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Spruce Knob?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Spruce Knob good for astrophotography?
Spruce Knob is West Virginia's highest point at 4,863 feet and one of the best dark sky sites east of the Mississippi. It sits in the Monongahela National Forest in a region of extremely low population density, with no major cities nearby to create light domes. The Observation Tower at the summit offers 360-degree panoramic views of the sky. The annual Almost Heaven Star Party draws serious astrophotographers from across the East Coast. Spruce Knob Lake nearby provides a foreground with water reflections. This is one of the few places in the eastern US where the Milky Way is genuinely dramatic, not just faintly visible.
When is the Milky Way visible at Spruce Knob?
The galactic core is visible from April through October, with June through August being peak. West Virginia summers bring humidity and some cloud cover, so checking the forecast before driving the winding access road is important. Spring and fall offer the best combination of clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The Whispering Spruce Trail loops the summit and gives multiple vantage points for shooting different sky positions.
