Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing on Stewart Island?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Stewart Island good for astrophotography?
Stewart Island, known as Rakiura, became the world's southernmost International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2019, with skies reading Bortle Class 1. With around 85 percent of the island protected as national park and almost no artificial lighting, beaches, forest clearings, and elevated viewpoints all offer unobstructed views of the night sky. Its name translates to "the land of glowing skies," a nod to both its sunsets and the Aurora Australis.
When is the Milky Way visible on Stewart Island?
From this far south, the Milky Way's galactic core is visible for much of the year, with the clearest, highest views during the southern winter from June through August, when nights are longest. That same stretch is also the best window for the Aurora Australis, though sightings depend on solar activity and can happen at any time of year.
