Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Vedauwoo?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, which factors in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Vedauwoo good for astrophotography?
Vedauwoo is a collection of massive Sherman granite formations rising out of the high Wyoming plains at 8,200 feet, just off I-80 between Laramie and Cheyenne. The rounded boulders and jumbled rock piles create surreal foreground unlike anything else in the region. Cheyenne is 30 miles east but its light stays low, and the open plains to the south and west are very dark. The Medicine Bow National Forest campground here gives direct on-site access.
When is the Milky Way visible at Vedauwoo?
The galactic core is visible from late March through October. Wyoming's high plains climate means low humidity and frequent clear nights, with wide southern horizons for tracking the core as it rises. The granite formations catch interesting textures under starlight and moonlight alike, making this a versatile location across different lunar phases.
