Check tonight's sunset →The Skinny Bridge at golden hour is one of Amsterdam's most photographed scenes: the lit wooden drawbridge reflected in the Amstel with canal house gables on either side. In summer the sun sets to the northwest and the warm light catches the bridge face-on. Early morning in autumn when mist sits on the water and no boats are moving produces some of the most atmospheric shots the city offers.

The Brouwersgracht runs east-west, which means the sun tracks along it in summer and evening light fills the canal from one end to the other. The combination of houseboats, bridges, and 17th-century warehouses gives more compositional variety than most other canal streets. Less crowded than the main ring canals, especially on weekday evenings.

The heathland and forest give good open horizons and some of the darkest skies accessible by car from the Randstad. - Mid-April is the peak of tulip season: Keukenhof gardens (30 km southwest) and the bulb fields around Lisse are at their best, and the flat light of Dutch spring is ideal for color photography
- Canal reflections are sharpest in April and May before boat traffic picks up for summer — early mornings on the Brouwersgracht and Reguliersgracht are especially good
- Golden hour pushes past 9 PM by late May, giving plenty of time to move between spots in a single evening
- North Sea winds are common in March and April: exposed spots like the IJ waterfront feel it most
- Amsterdam sunset in June can run past 10 PM CEST, with golden light lasting well over an hour
- The canal ring is at peak crowd in July and August: sunrise shoots before 6 AM give you the canals almost entirely to yourself
- Dutch summer nights barely get truly dark in June: wait until late July or August for usable dark skies outside the city
- Thunderstorms roll in off the North Sea in summer and can leave dramatic skies in their wake at golden hour
