Grand-Place at Blue Hour
City Centre · UNESCO World Heritage Site

One of the most photographed squares in Europe, and for good reason. The Gothic Hôtel de Ville tower and the ornate guild houses create a perfectly enclosed space that captures golden and blue hour light in exceptional ways. Shoot from the northwest corner at blue hour for the tower catching the last sky color. At night the LED illumination system shifts color — blue hour is the window when ambient and artificial light are balanced. The square is pedestrian-only but fills with tourists by mid-morning.

Basilica of Koekelberg
Koekelberg · 104 m dome · Terrace access

The fifth-largest church in the world by floor area sits on a hill in the northwest of Brussels. The dome terrace at 52 m gives the best elevated westward view over the city toward the setting sun. Looking east from the terrace, the Grand-Place spire and the EU quarter are visible in the skyline. The lantern terrace at the top of the dome (104 m) requires advance booking but gives a 360° view that no other point in flat Brussels can match.

Parc du Cinquantenaire
European Quarter · Triumphal arch

The 1880 triumphal arch in the Cinquantenaire park gives a long compositional axis from the park entrance through the arch toward the EU quarter. At sunset the low sun comes from the west and illuminates the arch and the park lawns from behind the shooter (standing east). The arch's curved wings frame the setting sun on clear evenings. The Royal Museums of Art and History flank the arch and catch warm light on their stone facades at golden hour.

Belgian Ardennes
Haute Fagnes plateau · Bortle 3–4

The Ardennes plateau in southeast Belgium and the Haute Fagnes moorland near Eupen are the best dark sky within reach of Brussels. The open heathland and spruce forests give unobstructed southern horizons for Milky Way core shots May through September. The Signal de Botrange (694 m, Belgium's highest point) is surrounded by open moorland and gives Bortle 3–4 skies on clear nights. Drive 120 km in about 90 minutes from Brussels.

  • Flower carpet event at the Grand-Place in even-numbered years (mid-August) draws enormous crowds

Frequently Asked

Frequently Asked Questions — Brussels Photography

North Sea maritime fronts move through quickly — cloudy afternoons can break into vivid evening color fast, and clear mornings can cloud over by evening. Goldcast reads live cloud cover, aerosol levels, and horizon data for Brussels on a 0–100 scale. Scores above 60 from the Koekelberg terrace or Cinquantenaire park typically produce good results. At 50.9° north, Brussels has very long summer evenings — golden hour begins after 8:30 PM CEST in June. In December it arrives around 4:00 PM CET and lasts barely 20 minutes. Low winter sun raking across the Grand-Place guild halls is exceptional even in a brief window. Goldcast calculates today's exact timing. Get today's golden hour →
Blue hour on a clear evening is the most reliable window: the illuminated guild halls and tower balance perfectly with the fading sky for roughly 20 minutes after sunset. Early morning (before 7 AM) is the only crowd-free window in any season. The cobblestones after rain become a mirror — rainy autumn evenings at blue hour are one of the Grand-Place's finest conditions.
The city is Bortle 9. The Belgian Ardennes (120 km southeast, Bortle 3–4) is the best accessible dark sky — the Haute Fagnes moorland near Eupen is particularly good. North Sea weather limits clear nights: check Starcast before making the drive. Clear cold winter nights give the best transparency, but Milky Way core is only up April through September. Basilica of Koekelberg dome terrace (104 m) for the highest elevated west-facing view over the city. Parc du Cinquantenaire for the triumphal arch composition at golden hour. Grand-Place at blue hour for the illuminated Gothic guild halls. Place Royale for the Neoclassical square and Coudenberg Palace area. See tonight's forecast →
