Best Spots in Edinburgh
Sunset Sunrise
Calton Hill
City Centre · 100 m elevation

Edinburgh's most versatile viewpoint. The National Monument columns frame the castle to the west at sunset; face east for a dramatic Firth of Forth backdrop at sunrise. The hill is compact enough to reposition quickly as light shifts. Arrive 40 minutes before sunset to read the light and stake your angle.

Sunset Sunrise
Arthur's Seat
Holyrood Park · 251 m summit

An extinct volcano inside the city. The summit gives unobstructed 360° views: castle and Old Town to the northwest, Firth of Forth and Fife coast to the north. The climb is 30–40 minutes from the car park. In autumn, low cloud sits below the summit and the city lights emerge — one of Edinburgh's rarest shots.

Forth Bridge, South Queensferry
13 km west · Open water horizon

The cantilever rail bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Scotland's most iconic structures. Shoot from the waterfront at South Queensferry with the bridge silhouetted against a western sky at sunset. The Hawes Pier gives low-angle water reflections. Check Dronecast: wind funnels through the Forth estuary and often exceeds limits.

Astro escape ~20 km south
Pentland Hills
Midlothian · Bortle 5–6

The closest escape from the city's light dome. Glencorse Reservoir and the Harlaw area offer open southerly horizons for Milky Way shots in spring and early autumn. Not a true dark sky site, but usable on new moon nights with transparent skies. Check Starcast before driving: Scotland's cloud cover makes or breaks the trip.

Edinburgh by Season
Spring · Apr–May
Milky Way returns. Light extends fast.
  • Core rises in the south after midnight — dark window shortens fast as May progresses
  • Bluebells around Arthur's Seat in May add rare foreground color
  • Rapidly changing weather: squalls clear quickly for dramatic skies
  • Golden hour at 8–9 PM, pushing later each week
Summer · Jun–Aug
Extraordinarily long golden hours.
  • Sun sets after 10 PM in June — plan for very late golden hour sessions
  • Astronomical twilight barely ends near midsummer: true darkness is fleeting
  • Consistent golden light quality; Edinburgh Festival crowds affect popular spots
  • Head to Galloway or Cairngorms for Milky Way if the window opens
Autumn · Sep–Nov
Best overall conditions of the year.
  • Low-angle light rakes across the castle and Old Town cobblestones all day
  • Temperature inversions create cloud seas below Arthur's Seat summit
  • Milky Way returns briefly in September before core sets too early
  • Atlantic fronts bring dramatic fast-clearing skies — check Goldcast daily
Winter · Dec–Mar
Dramatic low light. True dark skies.
  • Golden hour starts at 3:30 PM and is brief — be in position early
  • Snow on the castle and Old Town is rare but exceptional: watch 10-day forecasts

Frequently Asked

Frequently Asked Questions — Edinburgh Photography

Scotland's weather is too variable to guess. Goldcast reads today's cloud cover, humidity, and aerosol data for Edinburgh and returns a 0–100 sky quality score. Scores above 65 typically mean vivid color from Calton Hill or Arthur's Seat. In summer, a high score is especially valuable: Edinburgh's northern latitude means golden light lasts well past 10 PM. Check tonight's score →
Edinburgh is at 55.9° north latitude, which creates extreme seasonal variation. In June, sunset is around 10:15 PM with golden light persisting near 11 PM. In December, golden hour may start as early as 3:30 PM and last only 20 minutes. Goldcast calculates today's exact window and blue hour on both sides. Get today's golden hour →
The city centre is Bortle 8 — not viable for core shots. The Pentland Hills (20 km south, Bortle 5–6) are the closest escape. The Lammermuir Hills (40 km east, Bortle 4–5) offer better skies. For serious Milky Way work, Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park (150 km, Bortle 2–3) is one of the best sites in Europe. Note that near-permanent twilight limits the dark window from May through July even at dark sites. Check tonight's astro score →
The galactic core is technically up April through September, but Edinburgh's latitude means astronomical twilight barely ends in June and July, limiting shooting to a narrow window around 1–3 AM. April, May, August, and September offer the most usable dark windows. Check Starcast's moon phase and cloud score before making the drive. Check Galloway conditions →
Edinburgh Airport creates a significant controlled airspace zone over the city. Holyrood Park (Arthur's Seat) and most of the Old Town are restricted. UK CAA rules require operator registration and a flyer ID certificate. Winds in Edinburgh are frequently above recreational drone limits — especially near the Forth estuary. Dronecast gives live wind data so you know before you go. Check Edinburgh wind conditions →
Calton Hill for 360° views combining the castle, Old Town, and Firth of Forth. Arthur's Seat (251 m) for elevated perspectives and cloud-sea inversion shots in autumn. Forth Bridge at South Queensferry (13 km west) for the iconic cantilever silhouette. Dean Village for intimate low-light street photography along the Water of Leith. See tonight's forecast →
