Best Spots in Lisbon
Sunset
Miradouro da Graça
Graça · Highest miradouro

The widest panorama in Lisbon. From here you get the castle, the red rooftops of Alfama, the Tagus, and the Cristo Rei statue on the far bank all in one frame. The sun sets directly over the river and the western hills in summer. A Lisbon sunset tonight from Graça with good conditions is hard to beat anywhere in Europe.

Belém Waterfront
Belém · Atlantic-facing riverfront

The Tower of Belém sits directly on the Tagus and gives one of Portugal's most recognizable foreground subjects at golden hour. The sun sets almost directly over the river mouth in summer, with the water catching amber and pink. Sunrise from the east bank puts warm light onto the tower's stonework with no crowds.

Sunset
São Pedro de Alcântara
Bairro Alto · Elevated garden terrace

A tiered garden terrace above Baixa with one of the cleanest elevated views of the castle and the eastern hills. Less crowded than Graça and easier to access from the Bairro Alto. The tree line frames the lower portion of the view naturally. Good for golden hour when the castle glows against the sky to the east.

Dark Sky Alqueva, Alentejo
Alentejo · Bortle 2–3

One of the darkest and most accessible dark sky reserves in Europe. The Alqueva reservoir sits in flat open country with almost no local light pollution, giving a full 360° horizon. Milky Way core shots here from April through September are some of the best you can get within two hours of a major European capital. Worth planning a dedicated trip around.

Lisbon by Season
Spring · Mar–May
Wildflowers, warm light, quiet streets.
  • Spring is widely considered the best time to photograph Lisbon: mild temperatures, low humidity, long evenings
  • The hills of Alfama are carpeted in purple jacaranda by late April, a rare foreground for rooftop shots
  • Golden hour pushes past 8 PM by May, giving time to work multiple miradouros in one evening
  • Atlantic winds are unpredictable in March: the coast at Cascais can be rough, the hilltop viewpoints are exposed
Summer · Jun–Aug
Long evenings, intense light, Atlantic breeze.
  • Lisbon sunset in summer tracks directly over the Tagus estuary, giving water color reflections most European cities don't have
  • The Atlantic breeze keeps Lisbon cooler than Madrid or Rome in July and August: pleasant for evening shoots
  • Crowds peak at Graça and Belém: arrive 45 minutes before golden hour for a good position
  • The Alentejo is bone dry in summer — Alqueva nights are reliably clear and the seeing is excellent
Autumn · Sep–Nov
Softer light, fewer tourists, golden hills.
  • September and October are outstanding: the summer crowds are gone but the evenings are still warm and long
  • The Alentejo hills turn gold in October, adding landscape depth to Alqueva dark sky trips
  • Atlantic storms return in November, bringing dramatic skies that reward patience at the miradouros
  • Sunrise shoots from Miradouro da Graça in October are some of the best the city offers, with clear air and low crowds
Winter · Dec–Feb
Short windows. Clear nights. Empty streets.
  • Sunset arrives around 5:15 PM in December: brief golden hour but the orange light on Alfama's tile facades is striking
  • Winter is Lisbon's rainiest season, but clear spells bring exceptional air transparency
  • The city empties out: Belém and the miradouros are quiet enough to set up a tripod without obstruction
  • Sintra's palaces in morning fog or low winter light are genuinely one of Europe's great photography scenes

Lisbon is unusually well-positioned for a major European capital. The Dark Sky Alqueva reserve in the Alentejo (120 km east) is Bortle 2–3, one of the darkest certified dark sky destinations in Europe. The drive is straightforward and the reservoir provides beautiful reflective foreground. Starcast scores conditions before you go. Check Alqueva conditions →
The galactic core is visible from the Alentejo roughly March through October, peaking June through August. Lisbon's southerly latitude extends the season compared to northern Europe.
