Best Spots in New Orleans
Sunset
Crescent Park
Bywater · Mississippi riverfront

The best elevated riverfront view in the city. The Crescent Park bridge gives a clear sightline west down the river bend, with the downtown skyline sitting perfectly in the frame. A New Orleans sunset tonight from the bridge when the sky is lit can be exceptional. The low flat terrain means nothing blocks the horizon.

Sunset Sunrise
Algiers Point
Algiers · West bank ferry landing

Cross the free ferry from Canal Street and you get the full New Orleans skyline across the river. The west bank position means you're facing east at sunrise and have the skyline silhouetted against a western sky at golden hour. One of the cleanest city skyline compositions in the South. Take the ferry back at blue hour.

Sunset
Lake Pontchartrain Lakefront
Lakeview · Open northern horizon

The only spot near the city with a true open horizon to the northwest. The lake stretches out flat with no interruption, and on good evenings the sky reflects in the shallow water. The old seawall and the lighthouse at Milneburg add architectural foreground. Best in fall and winter when the sun tracks more directly over the water.

Astro escape ~250 km northwest
Kisatchie National Forest
Central Louisiana · Bortle 4–5

The most accessible genuine dark sky site from New Orleans. The longleaf pine forest gives good foreground and the skies away from Shreveport and Alexandria are dark enough for wide-field star work. A dedicated overnight trip, not a spontaneous drive. Worth planning around a new moon window with confirmed clear skies.

New Orleans by Season
Spring · Mar–May
Best light of the year. Warm, vivid evenings.
  • March through May is the sweet spot: warm temperatures, lower humidity than summer, and dramatic cumulus clouds that make Gulf Coast sunsets extraordinary
  • Azaleas bloom across Audubon Park and City Park in late March and April, pairing well with golden hour light
  • Spring storm fronts move through quickly and often leave spectacular post-storm skies at sunset
  • Wind off the Gulf is manageable and generally predictable in spring compared to summer squalls
Summer · Jun–Aug
Long sunsets. Intense heat. Watch the weather.
  • Golden hour runs past 8 PM in summer, but afternoon thunderstorms build almost daily and can wipe out a sunset fast
  • When storms clear by evening the skies can be spectacular — dramatic cloud structure with amber and pink light
  • Heat and humidity are significant: plan shoots for early morning or the last hour before sunset to avoid the worst of it
  • Hurricane season runs June through November: always check conditions before heading out to exposed lakefront spots
Autumn · Sep–Nov
Humidity drops. Clear evenings return.
  • October and November are some of the best shooting months: humidity falls, air clears, and the light quality improves noticeably
  • The Mississippi River runs high in fall, making Crescent Park and the levee walks feel more dramatic
  • Bald cypress trees in City Park turn rust-red in November: one of the city's most underrated seasonal shots
  • Evening temperatures are comfortable well into November, making long golden hour sessions enjoyable again
Winter · Dec–Feb
Crisp air, low crowds, sharp light.
  • Sunset comes early — around 5:15 PM in December — but the air is dry and clear by Gulf Coast standards
  • Winter morning fog on the river and in the bayous creates some of New Orleans' most atmospheric conditions
  • The French Quarter and Garden District are quieter in January, making architectural shoots and street work easier
  • Cold fronts push through and leave behind clear, calm days with excellent visibility for city and water shots
