Best Spots in Toronto
Sunset Sunrise
Toronto Islands
Lake Ontario · Ferry from downtown

The best overall photography location in Toronto. From the islands' north shore you get the full skyline — CN Tower, financial district, and Rogers Centre — reflected across the lake. A Toronto sunset tonight from Centre Island with color in the sky is the classic shot, but sunrise from the east tip of Ward's Island is quieter and equally striking. Take the first ferry for the best light.

Sunset
Polson Pier
East Waterfront · Elevated views

A working pier on the east waterfront with an elevated vantage point over the lake toward the skyline. The CN Tower sits prominently in the frame to the west and the open lake gives a clean foreground. Less visited than the islands and accessible without a ferry. Best from late spring through fall when the sun tracks south enough to light the skyline face-on at golden hour.

Sunset Sunrise
Scarborough Bluffs
East Toronto · Lakeside cliffs

Dramatic white and clay cliffs rising up to 90m above Lake Ontario, east of the city. Sunrise here puts warm light on the cliff faces with the lake below. The bluffs run for about 15 km and offer multiple compositions depending on the season and light angle. Least crowded on weekday mornings in fall. Paths can be muddy after rain: check conditions before heading out.

Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve
Muskoka · Bortle 3–4

One of North America's oldest designated dark sky preserves, about two hours north of Toronto near Gravenhurst. The granite barrens give open sightlines in every direction and the Muskoka lakes provide excellent reflective foreground nearby. On a clear new moon night in summer, the Milky Way core is well above the southern horizon. Worth planning a dedicated overnight trip around confirmed clear conditions.

Toronto by Season
Spring · Apr–May
Lake effect clears, long evenings return.
  • April is transitional: cold lake air creates frequent low cloud and fog that can make or break a sunset, but also produces atmospheric conditions over the water
  • By May the evenings extend fast — golden hour pushes past 8 PM and the lake warms enough to reduce persistent cloud
  • Cherry blossoms peak at High Park in late April, drawing crowds: arrive before 8 AM for clean compositions
  • Wind off the lake can be strong in spring — exposed waterfront spots like Polson Pier feel it most
Summer · Jun–Aug
Long golden hours over the lake.
  • Toronto sunset in summer runs past 9 PM EDT — one of the longer golden windows of any major Canadian city
  • The lake surface is calm on still summer evenings, giving perfect skyline reflections from the islands and Polson Pier
  • Humidity builds through July and August but the lake moderates temperatures: evenings are generally comfortable for long shoots
  • New moon weekends in June through August at Torrance Barrens are the prime Milky Way target from Toronto
Autumn · Sep–Nov
The best light of the year. Foliage season.
  • September and October bring Toronto's clearest skies: humidity drops, air crispens, and the lake reflections sharpen
  • Fall foliage peaks in mid-October across the Don Valley, High Park, and Scarborough — low golden light on the color is exceptional
  • Lake Ontario stays relatively warm into November, creating sea smoke on cold mornings that adds atmosphere to waterfront shots
  • The islands are much quieter after Labour Day: September through October is the best window for unhurried island shoots
Winter · Dec–Mar
Ice, fog, and dramatic lake light.
  • Sunset arrives around 4:45 PM in December — brief but the low sun hits the CN Tower and skyline with intense amber light
  • Lake Ontario rarely freezes completely, but ice formations along the waterfront in January and February add foreground interest
  • Lake effect snow squalls can produce dramatic skies that clear fast, leaving vivid post-storm color at golden hour
  • Cold air over warmer lake water creates sea smoke and fog that rolls through the islands and waterfront in spectacular fashion

Golden hour shifts considerably across the year. In summer, Toronto golden hour can begin around 8:00–8:30 PM EDT and last over an hour. Toronto is Bortle 8–9, so you need to drive. Torrance Barrens (170 km north, Bortle 3–4) is one of North America's oldest certified dark sky preserves and the most accessible serious dark sky site from the city. Algonquin Provincial Park (260 km north, Bortle 3) is worth the longer drive for dedicated Milky Way work. Starcast scores conditions before you go. Check Torrance Barrens tonight →
The galactic core is visible from dark sites near Toronto roughly April through September, peaking June through August. New moon weekends at Torrance Barrens or Algonquin from May through August are the prime window. The core sits relatively low in the southern sky from Toronto's latitude, so a clear southern horizon at your chosen site matters. Check conditions tonight →
Toronto has significant restrictions under Transport Canada rules, with controlled airspace around Billy Bishop Airport and Pearson International covering much of the city. The waterfront and most parks have additional local restrictions. You need a Transport Canada drone pilot certificate and drone registration. Dronecast gives live wind and weather data for areas where flight is permitted. Check wind conditions →
The Toronto Islands for the full skyline reflection over the lake, Polson Pier for an elevated east waterfront view of the CN Tower, Scarborough Bluffs for dramatic cliff and lake compositions at golden hour, and Sugar Beach for a central waterfront position with the skyline to the west.
