Sunset
Signal Hill
City Bowl · 350 m · Drive-up access

The most accessible sunset viewpoint in Cape Town. The Atlantic seaboard stretches north: Clifton, Camps Bay, and the Twelve Apostles peaks form a dramatic western panorama. Lion's Head rises to the south — include it as a silhouette or shoot west for pure ocean-and-sky. Drive up Signal Hill Road or walk 20 minutes from the lower cable car station. The viewpoint is large and photographers can spread out.

Bloubergstrand
25 km north · Table Mountain panorama

The definitive Table Mountain-over-ocean shot. Drive 25 km north of the city to the Blouberg beach and face south: Table Mountain, Lion's Head, and the full Cape Peninsula are visible across Table Bay. Best at sunrise when the mountain catches first light from behind you. The beach is unobstructed and gives room to work with foreground waves and long exposures. Check Dronecast: offshore winds here can be severe.

Chapman's Peak Drive
30 km south · Atlantic cliff road

The cliff road south of Hout Bay carves through 600-metre-high sandstone with Atlantic viewpoints every few hundred metres. Pull-offs along the drive face directly west over the ocean. Sunset from Chapman's Peak involves waves crashing below and open sky above with no obstructions. The road is toll-operated and closes in extreme winds. This is the Cape's most dramatic drive-up sunset location.

Cederberg Wilderness
230 km north · Bortle 2–3

One of the best dark sky destinations in the world. The Cederberg mountains offer Bortle 2 skies with extraordinary rock formations as foreground. The Milky Way core rises in the north from October through April in the southern hemisphere — the galactic center is higher above the horizon here than from any site in Europe. The Algeria Campsite and Dwarsrivier Farm are the main base camps. Plan 3 hours from Cape Town.

Frequently Asked

Frequently Asked Questions — Cape Town Photography

Cape Town's conditions change fast. The south-easter wind can build Table Mountain cloud in under an hour on an otherwise clear day. Goldcast reads live cloud cover, aerosol data, and horizon clarity and scores 0–100. Scores above 65 from Signal Hill or Chapman's Peak typically produce exceptional Atlantic color. December through March is the most reliable season. Check tonight's score →
Cape Town is in the southern hemisphere, so seasons are reversed. Summer golden hour (December–January) begins around 7:15–7:45 PM. Winter golden hour (June–July) starts near 5:00–5:15 PM. The low winter sun rakes across Table Mountain's face in dramatic fashion even in a short session. Goldcast calculates today's exact window. Get today's golden hour →
Cape Town is one of the best-positioned cities in the world for Milky Way access. The galactic core rises in the north (reversed from northern hemisphere) and is visible October through April — peaking December through February. The Cederberg Wilderness (230 km north, Bortle 2–3) is a world-class site. Tankwa Karoo (280 km north, Bortle 2) and the Sutherland plateau (370 km northeast, Bortle 1–2) are among the darkest accessible skies on the planet. Check tonight's astro score →
In the southern hemisphere, the Milky Way core is best positioned October through April. December, January, and February are the peak months: the core is high in the northern sky during the long summer nights. May through September the core is too low or below the horizon. The Cederberg and Tankwa Karoo are spectacular from October through April on new moon nights. Check Cederberg conditions →
Cape Town International Airport restricts eastern city airspace. Table Mountain National Park requires SANParks drone permits — most popular locations are inside the park boundary. SACAA regulations apply throughout South Africa. The south-easter wind makes many days unsafe for flight regardless of legality: check Dronecast for live wind speed before going out. Signal Hill outside the park boundary has more accessible zones. Check Cape Town wind conditions →
Signal Hill for the Atlantic seaboard panorama with Lion's Head silhouette. Bloubergstrand (25 km north) for the classic Table Mountain-over-bay sunrise composition. Chapman's Peak Drive (30 km south) for Atlantic cliff sunsets. Camps Bay beach for low-angle beach scenes with the Twelve Apostles behind. Lion's Head summit (669 m, 2-hour hike) for true 360° Cape Peninsula views. See tonight's forecast →
